REMARKS: At Cal, while lackadaisically slouching toward the math department, I always took as many art electives as possible. One was a sculpture class where I was crammed in with a bunch of dental students honing their manual dexterity skills.
Fortunately this class was given by Jacques Schnier, a fine-arts sculptor who always -- even while engaged in vocational training -- emphasized the aesthetic. An old-time sculptor from the Art Deco era, Professor Schnier seemed to start with a figurative idea, then would take off at some point into blocky fantasies of Deco and cubistic design.
Years later I started this sculpture as a regular nude, but found myself suddenly imbued with the Jacques Schnier afflatus.
PROVENANCE: Collection the artist.
